Who Is God, Really? 4 Life-Changing Characteristics of God's Character

If you asked ten people, "Who is God?" you would probably hear ten different answers.

Some picture God as distant. Others see Him as angry or impossible to please. Some believe God is loving but uninvolved, while others assume He is simply a higher power watching from afar.

The truth is, our understanding of God is often shaped by our experiences, culture, or even our disappointments—not necessarily by who God has revealed Himself to be.

But what if we didn't have to guess?

Jesus answered that question once and for all.

When one of His disciples asked to see the Father, Jesus gave a remarkable response:

"Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father." (John 14:9)

If we want to know who God is, we begin by looking at Jesus. He is the perfect revelation of the Father's heart, character, and nature. Throughout this series, we'll discover that knowing God isn't about collecting religious information—it's about seeing the Father through the life of Jesus Christ.

What Is God Like?

Jesus wasn't simply sent to deliver God's message—He came to reveal God's character.

Scripture describes Jesus as "the image of the invisible God" (Colossians 1:15) and "the exact representation of His being" (Hebrews 1:3). Every interaction Jesus had with people reveals something about the heart of God.

Here are four powerful characteristics of God we discover through Jesus.

1. God Is Compassionate

One of the most repeated descriptions of Jesus throughout the Gospels is that He was "moved with compassion."

Jesus didn't avoid broken people. He sought them out.

He welcomed the hurting, healed the sick, forgave sinners, and offered hope to those everyone else overlooked. His compassion reminds us that God is not distant, irritated, or indifferent toward our pain.

Instead, God sees our struggles, understands our weaknesses, and responds with mercy.

When we understand God's compassion, we stop approaching Him with fear and begin approaching Him with confidence.

2. God Is Humble

Humility may not be the first characteristic we associate with God, yet Jesus demonstrated it repeatedly.

The Creator of the universe washed His disciples' feet.

The King of Kings laid down His life for humanity.

Rather than demanding to be served, Jesus chose to serve.

His humility reveals that God is approachable. He invites people into relationship instead of pushing them away. No matter where you've been or what you've done, God welcomes those who come to Him with an open heart.

3. God Has Authority

Jesus calmed storms with a command.

He healed diseases.

He cast out demons.

He spoke with an authority unlike anyone had ever seen.

These miracles weren't simply displays of power—they revealed the authority of the Father.

The same God who created the universe is able to bring peace into the storms of our lives.

Knowing God's authority gives believers confidence to trust Him even when life feels uncertain because His power is always greater than our circumstances.

4. God Is Truth

In a world filled with conflicting opinions, broken promises, and shifting values, God's truth never changes.

Jesus declared that He came to bear witness to the truth.

God never manipulates.

God never deceives.

God never lies.

His character is completely trustworthy.

Because God's promises are rooted in His unchanging nature, we can build our lives upon His Word with confidence.

Why Knowing God Changes Everything

Many people know about God without truly knowing Him.

Religion alone cannot answer the deepest questions of the human heart.

Only a relationship with Jesus reveals the Father.

As we discover God's compassion, humility, authority, and truth, our perspective begins to change. We stop viewing God through the lens of our experiences and begin seeing

Him through the life of Christ.

The more we know Jesus, the more we understand what God is really like.

And that changes everything.
